FINDING A *VERY OLD* WEBER GRILL
It's been a few years since I last picked up an old Weber charcoal grill. I still search daily, but it's rare to find anything worth buying where I live. Today was different. These old metal lid-handled (MLH) Weber's are very rare.

Korean BBQ on the Weber 26 - Bottled Bulgogi Marinade from H-Mart
Переглядів 5795 місяців тому
This is one of my go-to cooks on the Weber kettle. It's easy and versatile. The meat can be frozen until it's ready to marinate, and the bottled marinade can be stored in the cabinet. The thin-cut ribeye is perfect for this cook.

It's been a while! I moved to a new place again. This time I'm closer to LA. It's hotter here, which explains why everyone smells kinda sweaty. Today I'm lighting some coals for the WKC. We're cooking some fish and we're doing it caveman style.

Spatchcocking and grilling a whole chicken on the Weber charcoal grill
Переглядів 11 тис.6 років тому
How to spatchcock and grill a chicken! This bird has HUGE BREASTS that proved difficult to cook. Total cook time ended up being 1:30 instead of the usual 1 hour. If I were doing this cook again I would move to direct heat after 30 minutes (breast side up) and let it cook there for 10 minutes before going back indirect.

Thanks for the kettle chicken. I got the weber hear controller that has a version of the vortex. I used the complete setup for ribs. Gives you more space. I'm gonna try the chicken for my next cookout Saturday
Personally, 9/10 times, I use Tumbleweed starters to light my charcoal. I used to use Weber's starter cubes, but I found they could be a bit messy. Plus, the Tumbleweeds burn a bit cleaner and a box is pretty cheap, so I switched over about 5-6 years ago. I also sometimes use butcher paper to light fires as I use it to wrap brisket, ribs, etc. and the rendered fat on the paper makes an AWESOME starter. Same principle as paper towels/newspaper soaked in oil, but the butcher paper is a bit more sturdy.
Awesome find, Troy! I wouldn't mind finding an MLH myself (Especially an MLH Ranch), but trying to find vintage Kettles in Texas is like trying to find a needle in a haystack... if the haystack was on fire XD
I got a 15 year old Weber Performer Premium for $75. I had to drive almost an hour and spend a day cleaning it up. Got the grill, cover, leather gloves and large chimney. LOVE IT.
Nice vid Troy! Looking forward to more. I love nakedwhiz - I used those reviews to find royal oak years ago and I've stuck to it. I usually get it at home depot.
hell ya bro
1963, MLH is pointing toward the lid vent
1979
Getting my coals out for the WKC!
60s
Nice!
1962. Very nice pickup Troy.
That's a 1981. Just like mine, same color and all. The metal on my lid handle is in better shape than that one. I garbage picked it about 15 months ago. I use it for all of my direct fire cooks' probably used once every-other week, 52 weeks/year. Love it.
My mistake. My 1981 (stamp letter on lid vent "B") WEber has a wooden attachment riveted to the steel bracket on the handle atop the kettle, not a rolled metal handle like yours. The handles on the side are the old style rolled steel handles, sans-wood or plastic. I am guessing that yours is pre-1981.
1963
I like the 3 daisy wheel intake vents. I bet that lid weighs more than the new ones. You scored!
The lid is very heavy! I can tell the lid is spun metal instead of stamped too, pretty neat.
Nice grill man, always feels good to get a find like that!
Thanks man!! It's been a long time since I've tapped into this passion, it felt good to get back out there.
Congratulations on your score. She’s a beauty. I’m guessing it’s early 90’s maybe a 92 model. How are the daisy wheel vents below? Those usually rust out real bad around the bolts. Awesome video! Thanks for sharing. Great dog too!
older...
I can’t believe how lucky you are in the USA to have so many brands and so many different categories of fuel so jealous of you guys, please enjoy you do not know how you are😊
That is a bad bag of Fogo.
I hope you're right. I'll buy another couple bags to review
I like the tumble weed starter too l think whey work well
They work well! Do you always use them or do you have other techniques too?
B&B has always treated meme good I get it fromACE
Rockwood lump is the best I've found but it's expensive. I usually use B&B Oak Lump. Because the bags can get banged around during shipping, you're always going to get a bad lump bag once in a while no matter what brand you buy. It's the nature of buying lump. Love my kettles but wish the charcoal grate wasn't so open. It's easier to run the smaller stuff in a Kamado. Love the channel.
I've heard so many good things about Rockwood Lump. I'm pretty sure Ace was selling it for a while and I tried it, but I may be just imagining things. Great point about the small lump bits, i'll make sure I factor that in when I review it! Thank you for commenting!
Thinking someone on the WKC forum recommended Jealous Devil XL Lump….. Not sure why you chose that crappy Fogo.
The video was already in progress! Also i had previously good experience with the Fogo :\ I'm not sure what to think about them now... I'll probably buy a few more bags just to confirm
B&B oak briquettes and their lump. Jealous devil briquettes and lump if you like bigger chunks
Do you find that the Oak briqs burn hotter than the others?
@Weberkettleclub I usually just use them for low and slow (225-300) but they can get hot enough for searing and such... The jealous devil briquettes and lump is hotter than anything else though
I gave up on Royal Oak years ago. It comes with way too much trash in the bag. Worse is Cowboy Lump. My number one favorite is FOGO Brazilian Eucalyptus Blend Hardwood Lump. If that's not available, I will buy FOGO Super Premium Lump. There's always pieces that are too large, but breaking a large piece is better than small pieces. If I can't find that, I will buy Jealous Devil or Kamado Joe Big Block XL Premium or FOGO medium lump, in that order. Then it would be B&B lump. It's good, but I think it's mostly oak. So, I find the smoke to be a little over powering. I've never tried the comp. logs but I did try B&B Hickory Lump and I thought it was better. Years ago (15+), I used BGE Lump and I loved it, but I stopped being able to find it locally. When I tried it again, I didn't think it was as good. Rumor I heard was it was made by Royal Oak and it was basically RO's premium lump.
That is great insight, thank you!! Fogo Eucalyptus sounds so exotic, i'll have to try to find that one!! I used that BGE lump a few times as well. I liked it because they sold it in HUGE bags
@@Weberkettleclub No problem. I saw a couple of bags of the Fogo Eucalyptus at the Ace Hardware in your video FYI.
@@spauldingjones5763 oooo really? was that the top shelf one with the green writing? thanks for pointing that out, I'll definitely go back and grab it!
@@Weberkettleclub FYI, Amazon has B&B's Hickory Lump on sale for $14 a bag.
BB is pretty good
You using the char logs or one of the other varieties? They have a lot of different products!
Damn right Troy!! 👊🏼, I really miss Weber charcoal! 😢
DUUUUDE, me tooooo. I had 15 or 20 bags of that stocked up for a while, but burned through it years ago. I even saved a bag with the intentions of reviewing, just to show weber the pros/cons, but I got desperate for better fuel and used it.
Jealous Devil lump and B&B briquettes
Excellent, thank you. Several comments have been in support of the Jealous Devil, that will have to be one of my next purchases
Last time I bought charcoal it was Royal Oak from Home Depot. Meh. Mediocre results. Better than Kingsford is all I know.
That's how I feel about the Royal Oak briqs as well. Better than Kingsford, but nothing special
Generally I grab Royal Oak from Walmart. It is inconsistent in its quality and size, but all I'm doing is burning it up anyway.
Thanks Kevin! Do you at least get consistent burns out of it? Is it just the size and shape that is inconsistent?
@Weberkettleclub Hey Troy. The burns are acceptable. It is mainly the size that's inconsistent. Lots of small pieces as you found in the Fogo bag. But, also some very large pieces that barely fit in the kettle! At least everything I have found is actually from tree sources. Cook on!!
That guy on your t-shirt looks familiar.
Right? Found the shirt at goodwill and thought the same thing!
Fish looked good Troy! Sorry to see the damage on your kettles.
Thanks Mike!
how many years ago did you film this?
So many years ago that it was actually shot on film and I had to have it digitized for youtube! That's why this video took so long
@@420vapezone you look so much younger. you ever heard of the Green Egg ceramic barbecue grill/oven? Anyway, it's great $1000 it cost me about 8 yrs ago. anyway, green egg has an all natural lump charcoal, no chemicals, this is so wonderful, you should try to find it. the taste of your meats, it provides, is the bomb, buddy
Yeah the beard shaving thing really changes my face!
@@Weberkettleclub sorry for all my typos and edits- i've just medicated
We have using Royal getting it from HD, and we like it alot!!
Nice, the Royal Oak seems popular! Do you stock up or just buy it as needed?
@Weberkettleclub at most a couple of bags
Kingsford burns like clockwork but it's a fun challenge to adapt to a variety of charcoal types. I presently have 8 kinds of charcoal to play with. I liked how you cut that bag of Fogo open to view its contents! Your beard growing skills are unmatched as well!
Oooh i'd love to hear more about your charcoal stash! Do you keep a variety of smoke-woods too? I appreciate the comment good sir!
My local Ace Hardware has great selection. I’ve settled on Jealous Devil lump and B&B briquettes.
Good to know! Most Ace stores seem to have good charcoal selection
I love the B&B char-logs. Maybe just a bad bag?
I hope so. I wonder if it got wet or something
Blues hog briquettes from ace hardware is my go to. Their lump is 90% small pieces, dust, chips, I won't buy their lump. 2nd would be the good charcoal brand briquettes. Little more smokey then I'd like but burns hot and clean. The charking is royal oak rebrand. How have you never heard of jealous devil?
I'm not sure how I've missed Jealous Devil for so long... how many years has Home Depot been carrying it? I walk through the grill aisle *every. single. time* i go to home depot, maybe I just assumed it was some generic stuff.
@Weberkettleclub 5-6 years or longer
hey hey what up troy long time cheers ...
Cowboy charcoal is the best I've found.
Cowboy lumps or briquettes?
@Weberkettleclub I've only used the briquettes. They burn really good, not much ash, at $8 a bag it's a good deal.
You look like a guy who reviews dry herb vapes. I myself am a grillpilled vaporent.
Yeah that's me!
Liars Liars Ribs on fire 😂😩
I was going to buy a vortex but after watching your video and listening to you I’m going to skip buying the vortex and use my slow and sear method for sure. Thanks for sharing…

@@Weberkettleclub let’s gooo! Just got a chestnut
H Mart is awsome…… I always wanted to try that marinade Thanks
Love the cook
Thank you sir! I'm just getting warmed up :) Do you and your lovely wife have any west coast travel plans? I'm planning to host a couple WKC meetups and would love to have you there!
@Weberkettleclub no west coast travel plans currently, but you never know
TRoy- my wife buys a lot of drive through coffees. I use the cardboard cup holders to start my chimney. Rarely use oil with them. Ignites the coals minutes every time. Good to see another video.
And a quick idea to help mitigate your thin cut steak losses; put a second grate on top of your food grate at a 90 degree angle. That, or use a mesh screen or basket. Just a thought
Great tip! We don't do to-go coffee much anymore, but we used to drink a shit ton of them!!
